Do you know your personal style inside and out? Is it classic and comfortable? Contemporary and sophisticated? Daring, playful, down-to-earth, bohemian? Having a clear understanding of what you like to wear––and what you don’t––makes shopping a whole lot easier and getting dressed way more fun.
Sympli team believes that feeling good in your clothes is akin to feeling good in your skin, and helping women find their individuality and the confidence to express their personal style is at the heart of everything we do. We even partnered with Dress for Success Vancouver with the goal to encourage and support women by providing them with unique, versatile, and elevated clothes to empower their professional (and personal) journey. Because when women feel confident in their selves and their self-expression, they’re one step closer to living the life they both envision and deserve.
To help you define your singular sense of style, we’ve outlined five simple steps below. Whether you’re at the starting point of developing your look or just in need of a little refresh, follow these rules on how to dress stylish and you’ll be looking and feeling your best in no time.
- Look to the clothes in your current wardrobe that you reach for time and again.
Take stock of which clothing items in your closet are the ones you reach for over and over as well as which ones you keep pushing aside. Dividing your wardrobe into your most- and least-worn pieces will help you figure out which ones you love wearing and which ones you don’t. You’ll also discover what silhouettes and colours make you feel your best, which is key to nailing your go-to look.
- Create a personal style mood board.
Whether your preferred medium is Pinterest or a good old-fashioned scrapbook and stack of fashion magazines, creating an inspiration board of people whose style you admire lets you identify and hone your fashion sense and style goals. And don’t just stick to outfit pictures––you can add single items, colour palettes and patterns, art, fabric swatches, and more. The result will be a smorgasbord of style that will help define your vision and values, and take you in a new direction with your looks.

- Forget “the rules.”
When defining your personal style, maybe the most important thing you can do is do a complete overhaul of everything you’ve been taught about what you “can” and “can’t” wear. You don’t have to be super tall and thin to wear high-waisted wide-leg pants. You don’t have to stop wearing skirts after age 40. You don’t have to fit into a certain box in order to wear something you really love! If you can’t stop thinking about that one print top you keep adding to cart but then removing it because you think you can’t pull it off, we’re here to encourage you just do it. If you want to pull it off, you just have to believe you can.
- Find your favourite pieces.
Once you’ve gotten specific on the types of styles and outfits that feel most “you,” the next step is to choose 7 to 10 pieces of clothing that you think best reflect your signature style. These can include trousers, jeans, T-shirts, sweaters, a fabulous coat or a standout pair of shoes. Then, style your outfits around these pieces. Love subtle jersey details? Wear them with a georgette accent to change the look, or over a crisp print button-down shirt for a more casual option. Soon these staples will become your core items––clothes that people immediately associate with you.

- Wear your values.
Being true to yourself and how you express that with what you wear starts with being true to your values. Knowing your values and finding your why is an empowering experience––having a deeper connection to your clothes makes you happier, more confident and the most like you. A few of our core values, for example, are comfort, confidence, down-to-earth, versatility, and sophisticated. These are what drive what we do every day: celebrating all women and their confident self-expression through the creation of clothes they can build your wardrobe around season after season.
