The New Athleisurewear and How to Wear It

By Lindsay Tapscott

Once upon a time in fashion, we would hear the word “athleisure” and immediately think of clothes like designer yoga pants, tapered joggers, oversized hoodies and thick-soled sneakers––essentially, workout clothes worn beyond your workout. The idea behind the athleisure look of then was to be comfortable and sporty, in the kind of active essentials that communicated “off-duty fitness lover” to your fellow brunch-goers or passersby.

The athleisure look of now, however, has evolved into something much bigger and all-encompassing: rather than a specific look one wears on weekends, today’s athleisure has become more of a seven days a week lifestyle (athlivesure, if you will). Now that most of us are working from home, a more comfortable, stylish look has become the norm––dressing to feel your best throughout your day to day. We now wear athleisure to run errands, to go get something to eat, even to conduct calls over Zoom. The choice to wear leggings as pants no longer feels unexpected; it’s something we all do all the time, now that comfort and style have become synonymous.

Our Motion Tank in Black & White

OK, you say: so now that the lines between workout-wear, loungewear and WFH-wear have been blurred, what does today’s athleisure look like? Well, we created our new Rib Collection to answer that very question: designed to elevate your everyday wardrobe, our new Rib items are done in our signature super-soft jersey and feature a white ribbed stripe accent. Plus, they’re available in the kind of soft neutral colours perfect for spring athleisure outfits (we like to mix and match ours for a variety of feel-good looks).

The new athleisure looks like wearing our Wide Leg Trouser Crop with our new Motion Trim Top and a pair of ballet flats or loafers (try the look in our Cactus/White colourway for something that’s soft yet unexpected). The wide leg of the pant allows ease of movement and it’s perfectly on point with current trends while the top boasts a relaxed fit and a flattering crew neck. It’s styling our boxy Slouch Sweatshirt and narrow-fit Motion Jogger with an interesting sneaker for a perfect mix of casual and chic. Or it’s slipping on our new Motion Slouch Neck Dress to run an errand and run a Zoom meeting (the elegant A-line fit flatters every figure). It’s wearing matching tonal sets––our Motion Pocket Boxy Tunic with Nu Yoke Legging in Silver Melange; our Narrow Pocket Pant with Trapeze Top Short Sleeve in black––all day every day (both looks can be worn with a blazer overtop for work or a longer cardigan once you clock out). The new athleisure is about elevated comfort; it’s sporty, but not in a “I just left the gym” sense. It’s intentional yet feels totally effortless. Not to mention, in our classic and beloved jersey fabric, which is oh-so-cozy, can be worn anywhere, and is wrinkle-resistant, the new athleisure ‘Sympli feels good too. What could be better?

So, consider this collection to be everything you need in your athleisure wardrobe: a carefully constructed mix of confident, comfortable, and easy-care, easy-wear pieces that combine style and practicality.
