A True Success Story: An Interview with Frank Desveaux and Kerri Caswell
Meet Kerri and Frank
In a series of interviews with Sympli’s top sales representatives, we learn how these award-winning agents got their start in the fashion industry and what led them to Sympli.
We recently sat down with Frank Desveaux and Kerri Caswell, one of Sympli’s most outstanding sales teams, to find out what makes this dynamic duo so successful and what they see for the future of Sympli.
How did you get started in your career?
Frank recounts the time he was interested in working for a well-known lingerie company. He walked into the company’s head office, handed them his resume and told them. “I want to work here.” After landing an interview, Frank explains how he went the extra mile to stand out. “During my second interview, I took off one of my shoes, gave it to the interviewer and told him that I just wanted to get my foot in the door. It worked, I got the job!”
Kerri says she had to make a decision between two very different career paths. “My career in fashion started in 1977” she says, I had two interviews: one for a telecommunications company, and the other for a sportswear company. In the end, I chose the job with the sportswear company because I thought fashion was going to be fun.”
Frank is quick to poke fun at himself.. “1977, that’s the year I was born.” They both laugh. It’s clear that these two have a really good camaraderie; they get each other.
Did you always know you wanted to work in fashion?
Both respond with a resounding, ’Yes!’ Kerri adds, “I’ve always loved fashion.”
Frank admits that before diving headfirst into a career in fashion, he wanted the opportunity to get his feet wet. “For me, it was about first getting my foot through the door. Once I did, I loved it!”
How were you first introduced to Sympli?
Frank tells the story of the time he walked into a colleague’s office many years ago and saw Sympli for the first time. “I saw Sympli hanging from a rack. I recognized the look and fit and told my colleague that when he was ready to give up the line, I wanted it. Unfortunately, when he left, he gave the line to someone else.”
Undeterred, Frank approached the newly hired Sympli representative and told her the same thing, he wanted the line when she left. Fortunately for Frank, upon her departure, she did leave the line to him. “She left, gave Sympli to me and told me, ‘I know this line is for you’. I took it and embraced it; It is a true success story.”
What advice would you give to people trying to start a career in fashion?
Without hesitation, Kerri responds “You have to love what you’re doing” she says. “I’ve been with Sympli for almost five years; I love this line.” Both agree that it’s important to believe in the brand you are representing and stand behind it.
Frank adds that you have to be passionate about what you’re doing. “If you don’t have a passion for what you are doing, your customers won’t either. Helping our customers is important to us. People often call us just to say how pleased they are with the service they are receiving.”
What makes Sympli stand out among brands?
Kerri is proud of the fact that Sympli doesn’t copy other designers, something that is fairly commonplace in the fashion industry. She is also quick to point out the difference between Sympli and Sympli knockoffs. “We use finer quality fabrics, and we have a phenomenal fit that can’t be duplicated.”
Frank maintains that loyal Sympli customers can spot a knockoff instantly. “They can tell immediately who’s wearing Sympli and who’s wearing a replica” adding that it’s easy to tell the difference. “Knockoffs are ill-fitting, and often very tight. They don’t have the same weight to give the clothing the same drape as Sympli. so clothes don’t hang properly.”
What’s your favourite part about your job?
Frank takes a moment before responding thoughtfully, “Working together as a successful partnership.” Kerri agrees and adds “Making sure that everybody looks fabulous.”
